In 1993 the German Hans von Loesch accidentally discovered this hidden, romantic
place at the southernmost point of Kenya’s coral coast and spontaneously decided
to quit his former life to make his dreams come true. He initially erected
several Makuti huts, surrounding a spacious restaurant and reception area and
thus created the individual and ecological location for guests, seeking the
original, traditional atmosphere among Mangroves and Baobabs, far off from
typical tourist destinations. Together with his partner Joerg Karasch, he
extended the compound by lovingly designed coral bungalows and several
maintenance facilities.
Mwazaro Mangrove Lodge nowadays is the largest ecological hotel complex in
Eastern Africa, close to KISITE MARINE PARK, KENIA. The complex completely runs
independently from the grid power and public water.
The entire area is only fed by renewable energy systems such as photovoltaic
solar systems, wind generators and solar hot water systems. Solar/Wind-run water
pumps at Mwazaro’s proper boreholes gain the water.
2 solar/wind DC water pump systems (picture 8, 9) supplying 12 000 liters water
per day.
52 Solar Panels x 115 Watt (picture 2, 3, 4) at the time being reach ca. 6 KW
per hour, resp. 32 KW per day. Combined with further 2 wind generators a total
output of
36 000 Watt per day is achieved. The battery output is 4800 AH. The maximum
inverter output on permanent run is 6.5 KW/h.
Divided up in two systems, the restaurant and the kitchen as well as the
apartments and the reception are supplied with sufficient energy 24 hours a day.
Particularly are run 3 deep freezers, 4 fridges, 8 ceiling fans, about 70 light
bulbs,
4 computers, the radiotelephone system and a commercial washing machine.
2 Edwards Solar Hot Water Systems of 440 liters each, supply hot water to the
apartments. Picture 2.
